Breakfast for the Birds

Breakfast for the Birds is the Enumclaw Garden Club’s beloved Winter fundraiser — a lively community morning that has become a local tradition over many decades. What began as a simple community breakfast has grown into a themed, festive event featuring a guest speaker, a hat parade, silent auction and raffle, and a small house plant sale — all to raise funds for conservation and community-beautification projects.

Over the years the event has developed a catalogue of favorite activities attendees now expect:

  • Parade of Hats: For years attendees and club members have shown off whimsical and elegant hats in a playful parade that’s become one of the event’s most photographed moments.
  • Themed Programs & Guest Speakers: Each year brings a theme and a featured speaker — past talks have ranged from garden art and wildlife habitat to creative gardening ideas (recent themes have included “Queen for a Day” and “Secret Garden.”
  • Silent Auction & Raffle: Local donations and member-crafted items have long been auctioned or raffled to raise funds — these community contributions give the event a lively market-like feel.
  • House Plant & Small Sale Items: In addition to breakfast and the program, small plant sales and member-donated garden items have historically complemented the event, giving gardeners a chance to take home a spring treasure.

These long-running elements — lively hat parades, engaging speakers, auctions, and community-made donations — give Breakfast for the Birds its distinctive mix of charm, civic pride, and practical support for local green projects. It’s an event that connects generations: rooted in the club’s long history while still evolving each year with fresh themes and new community partners.
